A vast, unhurried region of Portugal, shaped by cork oak forests, ancient olive groves and plains that stretch toward the Spanish border.

OUR DESTINATIONS IN THE REGION

discovering The Alentejo

A place lived in for thousands of years, where megalithic monuments still stand in the fields and medieval villages perch on hilltops. The pace here is deliberate, the food is simple and extraordinary, and the late-afternoon light is something you spend years trying to describe to people who have not seen it.

monsaraz

A medieval village perched above lake alqueva, all whitewashed walls, cobblestone streets and wide-open views. Go at dusk, when the light turns gold across the water.

ESPORÃO

One of portugal’s great wine estates, a few kilometres from monsaraz. The drive in through the vineyards is reason enough to go. tour the winery, stay for lunch, taste the wine, and take a bottle home.

SÃO PEDRO DO CORVAL

Portugal’s pottery village, where workshops line the main street and clay is still shaped, painted and fired by hand. The kind of place you stop for twenty minutes and leave two hours later.

ÉVORA

A UNESCO world heritage city with a roman temple at its centre, and the feeling that people have always known this was somewhere worth being. Spend the morning, stay for lunch, then walk back out through the old walls.

São Lourenço do Barrocal

A two-hundred-year-old estate in the Alentejo, surrounded by olive groves, cork oaks, vineyards and long golden light.

Our first place in focus, and a celebration of the people who care for remarkable places.

SÃO LOURENÇO DO BARROCAL

Some places take centuries to become what they are. Barrocal is one of them.

A working estate in the foothills of Monsaraz, planted with olive trees, vineyards and cork oaks, lived in and slowly shaped since 1820. After two hundred years of the same unhurried rhythm, it now exists as são Lourenço do Barrocal: a hotel, a farm and a community, all on the same land.

It is wide enough to get lost in, and beautiful enough that you want to notice every part of the way through. The roads feel less like routes than part of the landscape itself.

Barrocal is one of the places where we first understood what amble could be, and why it mattered.
